  • A Quartet of Good Snacks Catering to Children
A Quartet of Good Snacks Catering to Children Every parent wants to give their child a snack that is both tasty and safe. When choosing a snack for a child, it is no surprise that parents lay their eyes on more wholesome snacks made with healthy ingredients. In Korea, organic snacks and snacks containing no artificial additives are continuously released on the market and are attracting a lot of attention among Korean parents. Tium International is a Korean snack exporter whose slogan is “Offering healthy and good snacks for children.” Since last year, Tium International has begun actively introducing organic snacks to foreign markets. Making Efforts to Produce Safe Snacks with the Daddy’s Heart Tium International was established in 2012 with the purpose of producing snacks that, out of considerations for consumer health, are made with somewhat more expensive but environmentally friendly ingredients. These ingredients are used instead of cheaper imported ingredients. The company is still a start-up and does not yet have its own snack-manufacturing factory. However, Tium International has reached out to several producers with its message and is currently producing organic snacks through OEM (original equipment manufacturing) at their factories. Mr. John Park, CEO of Tium International, explains, “As a dad with two daughters, I want to produce safe and good quality snacks catering to children. I am putting all my heart into this endeavor and that is why I established Tium International. My goal is to produce snacks―with Korean ingredients and in modernized manufacturing facilities―that can appeal to consumers worldwide.” “i Snack” for Infants―Made with Organic Ingredients Such as Brown Rice Grown without Pesticides Tium International is exporting overseas four types of snacks: i Snack, Kimstar, Natto Choco, and Simply Grain.i Snack is Tium’s flagship product. It is designed for infants and children. The main ingredient is brown rice grown without agricultural chemicals. The snack also contains dried organic strawberry, environmentally friendly spinach, organic yogurt, and organic sugar. What’s more, some powder of cheonggukjang (Korean fast-fermented soybean paste) is added to the snack to facilitate digestive absorption of the product by infants and children. The snack is produced through a puffing method in which high temperature and high pressure are applied in lieu of frying. The method allows the taste and nutrition of the ingredients to be maintained while also making the snack low in calories (about 120-130kcal per 30g). This is a mere one-third of the caloric value of common snacks. i Snack is as small as an infant’s finger, so it is easy for infants to grip the snack with their hands. The product comes in three flavors: spinach, strawberry and yogurt, and cheese. The Merit of Producing Wholesome Snacks― Featuring Seaweed, Cheonggukjang, and Grains Kimstar is a seaweed snack made with Korean seaweed, which is rich in minerals, vitamins, and dietary fibers. The main ingredients are seaweed, glutinous rice paste, and sesame oil. The product comes in three flavors: sesame, almond, and gochujang (Korean red pepper paste). Kimstar is crispy as it is also produced through the puffing method. What’s more, it is low in calories (below 100kcal per 20g).Natto Chocolate is chocolate-coated balls of freeze-dried fermented soybeans (cheonggukjang beans). Cheonggukjang―one of the Korean fermented foods―is rich in nutrition and effective in preventing cardiovascular disorders and osteoporosis. However, many people dislike cheonggukjang for its smell. Natto Chocolate does not have the smell of cheonggukjang but retains its taste, which is in great harmony with sweet chocolate. The healthy chocolate balls come in three flavors: original (chocolate), blueberry, and strawberry. Simply Grain is a healthy, low-calorie grain snack. It is made mainly of organic brown rice and has a simple taste. There are three types of the product: original (brown rice), purple sweet potato and sweet pumpkin, and blueberry. Making Inroads into Foreign Retail Stores and Organic Food Chain Stores To advance into foreign markets, Tium International has been participating in international food trade fairs and promotional events since last year. At the fairs, it has actively introduced its organic snack products to foreign consumers. The company is currently exporting its snacks to China (and Hong Kong), the US, Canada, Singapore, New Zealand, and several other countries. The representative foreign distributors dealing in the snacks of Tium International are Ole (a high-end retail store in China) and WholeFood Market (an organic food store chain in the US). Recently, the snacks of Tium International succeeded in entering China’s largest online supermarket Yihaodian (1號店). What’s more, Tium International products were featured on China’s No. 1 home-shopping channel―HappiGo―so it is anticipated that the exports of snacks to China will further increase.Mr. John Park speaks of his aspiration, “In the first half of this year, Tium International will participate in major foreign food trade fairs―FHI (Food&Hotel Indonesia), SIAL Shanghai, and Fancy Food Show (in New York)―to promote our snacks to foreign buyers and local consumers. We will use these opportunities to cultivate foreign distribution networks and further expand the market for our organic snacks into the US, China, and Southeast Asia.” Inquiries Tium International Tel +82-2-6243-6345 Email john.tium@gmail.com Website www.circlefood.co.kr
  • Goraebab Honey-milk Flavor
Goraebab Honey-milk Flavor With Milk and Honey Boasts Savory Sweet Orion Group invented a new flavor for its Goraebab product. The milk and honey flavored Goraebab was launched simultaneously in Korea and China. Goraebab is a biscuit that is made in the shapes of nine different kinds of seafood. It receives a lot of love from consumers in Korea and other countries alike. Last year, the product became No. 1 in the Chinese biscuit market with sales amounting to USD$125 million. Orion Group saw a good potential in honey flavored products in the domestic market and developed Goraebab with the new flavor: honey-milk. It was decided to start sales of the new product in Korea and China at the same time. Released Simultaneously in Korea and China A big advantage of Goraebab Honey-milk Flavor is that it is contains sweet honey and milk, which can promote a child’s growth and captivate the taste buds of the main consumers of the biscuit, children. In consideration of consumers’ health, the product is made with potato flour instead of wheat and the sodium content in the snack is reduced by 30 percent. • Keep the Taste of the Original Spicy TKCT Foods Enters the Overseas Market with Instant
Tteokbokki Using Powdered Soup Instead of Liquid It is easy to spot foreign tourists tasting tteokbokki (spicy stir-fried rice cake) on the streets of Myeong-dong and Insa-dong, two representative tourist destinations in Seoul. You can also find tteokbokki restaurants outside of Korea―as close as the Shinjuku area of Tokyo and as far as the downtown Santiago, the capital of Chile. It is not too much to say that tteokbokki is having its own Hallyu (Korean wave). As tteokbokki is becoming increasingly popular among foreign consumers, food companies are creating instant tteobokki products which can be eaten conveniently at home, and exporting them to Japan, China, Southeast Asia, and other markets. Located in Gyeongsan City (of North Gyeongsang Province), KCT Foods is a promising company that took the top selling dish on the menu of a popular tteokbokki franchise in Daegu City, Famous Princess Tteokbokki, and turned it into an instant tteokbokki product. The product’s name is Princess (called “Gongju” in Korean) Tteokbokki, and KCT Foods has been knocking on the doors of foreign markets with this product since last year. Developed an Instant Product Based on the Dish of a Tteokbokki Franchise There is a big difference between KCT Foods and other tteokbokki exporters: KCT Foods commercialized the flagship dish of a franchise specializing in tteokbokki, so its taste has already been verified by consumers. The Famous Princess Tteokbokki franchise is famous among Koreans and foreigners alike for keeping the original spicy taste of tteokbokki, so KCT Foods was confident that the commercialized dish would have a good potential in foreign markets and actively started developing the instant product for export.Mr. Kim Jung-rae, CEO of KCT Foods, explained, “Most exported instant tteokbokki products are very sweet, but our company focuses on maintaining the original spiciness of tteokbokki. Also, to differentiate our product from the competitors, we have especially put many efforts into developing the tteokbokki soup and improving the storability of the product.” Can Be Stored at Room Temperature for Up to Eight Months…Light Weight of the Product Increases Efficiency During Distribution In general, instant tteokbokki products use sliced tteok (rice cake) and a liquid soup made with gochujang (red pepper paste). In contrast, KCT Foods has succeeded in developing a powdered soup from red pepper powder and various vegetables. The product with powdered soup can be stored at room temperature for up to eight months. Its weight is also 20 percent lighter than that of other instant tteokbokki products, so it has a higher distribution efficiency. The liquid soup made with fermented red pepper paste usually contains an alcoholic ingredient, but no alcohol is used in the powdered soup made with red pepper powder, so Muslim consumers can enjoy the instant tteokbokki of KCT Foods with an easy mind.Ms. Lee Mina, the global marketing director of KCT Foods, said, “Because we use no alcoholic ingredients and keep the original spicy taste of tteokbokki, halal buyers―from Indonesia and Malaysia―are highly interested in our product. They also told us that the powdered soup makes the after-taste of the product more refreshing.” No Artificial Additives…Going to Obtain HACCP Certification KCT Foods’ instant tteokbokki product for export is offered in two types of packaging: cups and pouches. The sizes of the packages are 230g (cupped tteokbokki, one portion) and 360g (pouch-packaged tteokbok-ki, two portions). The product comes in three flavors: original, spicy, and mild (for children). The company plans to develop and release several new flavors―cheese, curry, and jjajang (black soybean sauce)―that match the tastes of foreign consumers. In consideration of consumer health, all the instant tteokbokki products of KCT Foods are made with real rice cake, and no artificial additives―such as artificial colors or sweeteners―are used. KCT Foods is paying a lot of attention to hygiene in order to secure the food safety. The company is pushing ahead with, and plans to complete in the near future, obtaining HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) certification for its instant tteokbokki manufacturing facility. Plans to Enter Japan and Halal Markets Last year, KCT Foods participated in international food trade fairs and exhibitions in ten different countries ―Japan, the US, Germany, Indonesia, and others. It also conducted market research to examine the overseas business potential. Based on the research findings, it decided to enter the Japanese, halal, and Central and South American markets. The company is going to start supplying its instant tteokbokki products to big Japanese distributor Itoyokato and to the Indonesian market―the biggest halal food market in the world―in the first half of this year. What’s more, KCT Foods recently made an experimental shipment of the tteokbokki products to Brazil and received a positive response from the local consumers. Yet another plan is to enter the kosher market, which can become a new blue ocean for the export of Korean agri-products.Ms. Lee said, “Thanks to the competitive edge we obtained by differentiating our instant tteokbokki with powdered soup, many foreign buyers are showing interest in our product and have approached us with import offers. We will actively participate in foreign food trade fairs―such as FOODEX JAPAN 2016 and SIAL Paris 2016―this year to promote the taste and excellence of the instant Princess Tteokbokki product to buyers and consumers overseas.” Inquiries KCT Foods Co., Ltd. • Sogon Sogon Snack Time
Sogon Sogon Snack Time Bokumjari’s Premium Snacks for Infants, Made with Rice and FruitsThe Chinese government had been enforcing a birth control policy―only one child per household―since 1980, but the recent low birthrate and rapidly aging population have emerged as major social problems in the country, so the restrictions have now been eased. The new, “two children per household” policy is designed to resolve some of the above-mentioned problems, and many economists predict that the Chinese consumption of baby products―such as baby food―will be rapidly increasing. Against these backdrops, Korean food exporters are quickly entering the Chinese baby food market. Bokumjari is one such company. It first exported its premium baby foods―such as rice snacks, rice chips, and rice smoothies―to China last November and is actively promoting its products among local consumers.Export Contract Signed with a Big Chinese Buyer Last September Established in 1981, Bokumjari is a producer and exporter of high-quality tea and jam products. The company noticed the trend for the growing consumption of high-quality imported foods for infants among medium- and high-income groups in China and Southeast Asia. At that time, Bokumjari started developing its own premium infant food products. Market surveys revealed that Chinese moms are especially interested in healthy snacks whose safety is guaranteed, so the company released the premium snack product for infants “Sogon Sogon Snack Time.” The snack is made with rice and organic fruits. Ms. Nina Kim―a manager of the sales team in the business department―explains, “China and Southeast Asia have a rice culture like Korea. Thanks to the healthy living trend, local mothers look for snack products made with natural ingredients such as fruits to give to their babies. We developed an infant snack that brings together rice and fruits. We have steadily introduced our snack at international food fairs in China and Southeast Asia and finally succeeded in making an export contract with a big Chinese buyer last September.” Comes in Three Types: Rice Snack, Rice Chip, and Rice Smoothie Bokumjari’s premium infant snack Sogon Sogon Snack Time comes in three varieties: Rice Snack, Rice Chip, and Rice Smoothie. All of them are free of artificial additives, such as artificial colors, and contain no sugar or salt. Rice Snack can be given to infants twelve months and up. The main ingredient of the product is brown rice grown organically. The snack is made using a puffing method in which a temperature over 100℃ and high pressure are applied in lieu of frying. The method helps maintain the taste and nutrition of the ingredients while also making the snack low in calories (about 100kcal per 25g). This is a mere one-third of the caloric value of common snacks. The product comes in three flavors: strawberry, sweet pumpkin, and spinach. Each product has a different type of nutrition―lactic acid bacillus (strawberry), zinc (sweet pumpkin), and calcium (spinach).Rice Chip can be eaten by babies six months and older. It is also produced through a puffing method. The product comes in four flavors. Its main ingredients are organic brown rice and organic white rice. The Rice Chip product is also a low calorie food (135-140kcal per 36g). Each Rice Chip contains the healthy and natural powders of fruits (strawberry, blueberry, etc.), vegetables (such as purple sweet potato and broccoli), or seafood (anchovy, seaweed, and so on). The raw ingredients for the powders are grown in Korea.Rice Smoothie is mainly made with organic GABA brown rice. Rich in lysine proteins, it is good for promoting the growth and development of children. The product is a nutritious beverage containing fruits and vegetables. Thanks to the organic brown rice, it has a smoother, more aromatic taste than other beverages made with fruits and vegetables. Rice Smoothie is offered in four flavors. Sweet pumpkin and pear are recommended for babies from eight months, whereas the mango and apple-carrot flavors can be given to infants who are twelve months and older. The smoothie is low in calories (75-90kcal per 85g).Thorough Control of Food Safety and Appealing Design of Packaging Bokumjari is making a lot of efforts to secure food safety. The packaging design of the premium infant snack product uses the colors of the pastel tones that infants and children like, and all edges of the product have a round shape. What’s more, the snack is as small as an infant’s finger, so it is easy for infants to grip the snack with their hands. Supplied to High-end Chinese Grocery Stores After an export contract was signed between Bokumjari and a big Chinese buyer last September, the infant snacks―Rice Snack, Rice Chip, and Rice Smoothie―have been supplied to major cities in mainland China from last November. These cities include Shanghai, Beijing, and Gwangzhou. The main distribution channels are premium food stores in famous department stores, food stores for babies, and local high-end retail chains such as Ole. The products are also going to be distributed in major Chinese supermarkets such as Carrefour and Sam’s Club. To enter into the Southeast Asian markets―Thailand, Vietnam, and so on―where the consumption of Korean agri-products is steadily increasing thanks to the popularity of Hallyu (Korean culture), Bokumjari is negotiating with big local buyers about the export of its premium infant snack products.Mr. Jeong Chan-soo, the CEO of Bokumjari, speaks of his aspiration, “We hope foreign infants who eat our premium infant snack products grow well and enjoy the tea and jam products of Bokumjari in the future. Bokumjari will develop as a premium food company by producing high-quality processed agri-products and exporting them.”Inquiries Bokumjari Co., Ltd.
